Google Sky - Google's pictures of the universe. If no buildings or trees block the view, you can still make out Venus in the twilight; it outshines everything in the sky but the Sun and the Moon. Aurora, or 'northern lights', is the natural light display in the sky in northern regions like Canada, Alaska, and northern Eurpoean countries that have had people puzzled for centuries as to what exactly they were, and how the light displays were made.

The volcanoes on Io have plumes that reach 100 miles above the surface of Io and spread debris over thousands of miles. What would “winter” be like if Earth had no tilt? Sketching is sometimes used within logs, and photographic records of observations have also been used in recent times. LIGO made its first detection on 14 September 2015, observing gravitational waves from a binary black hole. [52] A second gravitational wave was detected on 26 December 2015 and additional observations should continue but gravitational waves are extremely difficult to detect. [53] [54] Combining observations made using electromagnetic radiation, neutrinos or gravitational waves with those made using a different means, which shall give complementary information, is known as multi-messenger astronomy. [55] [56] One of the oldest fields in astronomy, and in all of science, is the measurement of the positions of celestial objects.

There is a 27 mile difference when the earth is measured by the equator, rather than pole to pole. The department of Physics and Astronomy, the Institute for Astrophysics and Space Science, the Gatton Academy and external research grants all helped fund faculty and student travel to the meeting. Britannica Singapore offers a range of astronomy articles free online, with a mix of historical and recent information. There are quite a few lessons out there using the idea of addressing a "galactic postcard or cosmic letter," but I really like this one because of the small printable images that students can use to visualize their place in space.

The Dark Sky Discovery map highlights Dark Sky Discovery Sites and other venues that will be running events through the winter. They did get the color of Titan’s atmosphere correct (again, check the image above); it’s a reddish-yellow from a thick organic haze that is made when the methane in the atmosphere is broken down by sunlight and recombines to form complex molecules. But do notice the point on the horizon where the sun rises or sets as seen from your kitchen window, or balcony, or yard.
