Who would know of the deeds of Achilles and Aeneas if it had not been for Homer and Vergil? The colonists at last learned how to raise crops and trade with the nearby Indians, with whom Smith had made peace.

Various groups have been formed to give women's history a voice, to promote the study of women's history and to maintain links with contemporary feminist activists. Michael also interned for two consecutive summers (2011, 2012) in the Collection of Vases and Minor Arts at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens. The action of Beowulf takes place in Denmark and modern Sweden; Chaucer drew his models from France and Italy; Malory translated mostly French romances; and Spenser and Milton for the long poem looked to Italy. Usually when the condition of Negroes is discussed we get a morality-play explanation in which the North is given the role of good and the South that of evil. Wellek dismisses some of this criticism as merely “ideology,” but Benjamin’s essay on Goethe for the Soviet Encyclopedia was rejected because it was not Marxist enough.

However, in the sixteenth century, the conditions were ripe for reform. Herodotus wanted his audience to see the wonders that Xerxes accomplished in crossing his army over the Hellespont on the ill-fated invasion of Greece.< 71 > To place us there, Herodotus tells the story from the point of view of a local Hellespontine who watches and relates the story in awe. Semler (1725-91) used the greatest latitude in discussing the origin and credibility of the sacred Scriptures, arguing that these subjects should be dealt with without regard to any Divine content.

It was Florence Nightingale's expertise and advice that proved instrumental in the establishment of Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Fawcett praises the book by saying, "Every student of the women's movement should add this book to his or her library" (Walsh v).
